Adam Crescenzi has been an Artist-in-Residence at Public School 3: The John Melser Charrette School since 2009, where he designs and facilitates original theatre workshops in K-5 classrooms that meet the standards and expectations of New York City Department of Education and New York State Blueprint for the Arts. Regardless of age, a typical residency has students participating in ten workshops and a culminating performance, with extra support, rehearsal, and reflection coming from the partnering classroom teacher. Generally, these residencies provide the opportunity for students to develop both their creative and their collaborative skills while building confidence; more specifically, students develop a deeper understanding of a certain content area (frequently literature, folk lore, or a historical unit of study) while enhancing their performance skills.
INTRODUCTION TO SHAKESPEARE
FCCA Teaching Artist Adam Crescenzi offers this residency for students in grades 5-12 and can adjust the curriculum to meet the individual needs of a specific school. By participating in a variety of theatrical techniques and drama-in-education practices relating to a particular text, students will not only develop their understanding of Shakespeare through reading, listening, and speaking the Bard's words; but also, students will enhance their critical thinking skills as they make connections from the text to the contemporary world around them. All lessons are experiential and will meet New York State Learning Standards in English and the Theatre Arts and the New York City Curriculum Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in Theatre. Recommended residency length would be 10-12 workshops led by the Teaching Artist, with additional writing and reflecting exercises facilitated by the participating classroom teacher.
DEVISED THEATRE I (COLLAGE PLAY)
This residency is available to students grades 6-12, who are interested in writing and performing. In each workshop, students will be exposed to a variety of both acting and writing exercises, enhancing creative skills in both areas. Each student will acquire a portfolio of original writing while enhancing their performance skills. With input from Adam Crescenzi and the collaborating classroom teacher, each student will select one or two pieces which will then be performed in a unique "collage" play in which each student is showcased presenting their own work to an audience of family and friends.
DEVISED THEATRE II (COMMUNITY PLAYWRITING)
Geared to high school students, grades 9-12, who are interested in creating a unique original piece of theatre. Students will work together and participate in a variety of creative writing exercises that lead to the culmination of a single text. Based on the size and scale of the residency, this text can either be performed by the students themselves, or performed by professional guest actors in a staged reading format; either performance would be directed by Adam Crescenzi.
FROM THE PAGE TO THE STAGE
FCCA Teaching Artist Adam Crescenzi offers this residency to students grades 5-12, in English language classrooms. The residency will focus on a specific piece of literature that the class is reading; using a variety of drama-in-education strategies and creative literacy techniques, students will be enabled to make personal connections from the book to the their own world, using the power of theatre. Theatre will illuminate both the literary themes and literary style of the novel. Residencies range from 4 workshops to 12, and can include a unique culminating performance designed by the Adam Crescenzi and the Classroom teacher.
