Made for an exhibition at Lincoln Center, the Louis Armstrong Collage Exhibition features reproductions of some of the remarkable collages created by Louis Armstrong affixed to the boxes of his audio tapes, and introduces audiences to this very public man who could turn his irrepressible creativity to arts other than music.

From the collection of Thomas Chen, President, Crystal Window and Door Systems. Antique Chinese wood windows and doors were considered both functional architectural elements and works of art. and were placed in the home according to Feng Shui to achieve harmony and balance. These intricately hand-carved pieces, collected from numerous towns and provinces throughout China, depict detailed scenery and characters. Thanks also to Steve Chen for his gracious support.

"Interwoven Worlds" highlights hand-made carpets and textiles for which the Turks are celebrated. Beautifully crafted pieces are presented within two recreated dwellings – a nomadic tent and an Ottoman-style home– to weave together the rich traditions of Turkic peoples across space and time. The textiles are complemented by ancient ceramics, glassware and metal-ware.

Alexander Bauer, co-curator of the exhibition, and an archaeologist who co-directs a field project in the Black Sea region of Turkey, will discuss the long-term history of these traditions. He is also a specialist in cultural heritage law and policy and museum studies, ethics and preservation.

Exhibition begins October 16th. View the Installation: October 12th & 13th, 12-5pm. Gallery Hours: Saturday and Sunday 12-5pm. Based on the original Wan Chun Ting pavilion that majestically stands on the east side of the Imperial Garden of the Forbidden City in China, this highly detailed 1:5 scale replica is made of red sandalwood, prized in Imperial China, and constructed using mortise-and-tenon joinery. The exhibition was organized by the Smithsonian’s Museum Conservation Institute, with assistance of the China Red Sandalwood Museum and the Savannah College of Art and Design.
