Art-making has become increasingly global and cross-cultural. Join us as we explore the importance and impact of different cultures on contemporary western art. Bring your work or an image of another artist to use for discussion. Artists working in any discipline are invited to bring in slides and CDs. Each artist is allotted a time to speak, followed by Q&A. Network over cookies and coffee. The public is always invited to meet area artists and join the discussion. Sun Feb 14th Meg Okura Pan-Asian Chamber Jazz Ensemble
Composer, violinist and erhu player Meg Okura, a Juilliard trained classical violinist, is one of the leading voices in today’s “World-Chamber Jazz” scene, which blends classical, jazz and world music. She also has performed extensively with some of the biggest names in music, including David Bowie, Diane Reeves, Kanye West and Quincy Jones. Starts at 2:00 PM.

Sat Mar 6th Chinese Blue Pipa Trio
For Families: Repertory Theatre of America, Inc. production presented by Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts as part of the Lunar New Year Festival. The Blue Pipa Trio, comprised of Min Xiao-Fen (pipa, vocals); Mark Helias (bass), and Steve Salerno (guitar), transcends borders with cutting-edge music. A breathtaking virtuoso and courageous pioneer, Min blends ancient Chinese music and her own compositions with interpretations of jazz and bluegrass. Min Xiao-Fen’s work has been commissioned by The Kitchen in NYC, the Trio has performed at the JVC Jazz Festival, and recorded for Bjork’s new album. Starts at 2:00 PM.
Sun Mar 7th Bakithi Kumalo Band with Robbi K
For Families: In a Celebration of the World Cup in South Africa with Music, Grammy award-winning bassist, composer, and vocalist Kumalo possesses a unique musical style reflecting influences from around the world, including South African traditional folk, contemporary jazz, and salsa. Kumalo has collaborated with Paul Simon, Cyndi Lauper, Herbie Hancock, and Randy Brecker, and leaves on tour with “Simon and Garfunkel” following this concert. Joining Bakithi onstage is vocalist Robbi “K” Kumalo, a powerful lyric soprano and back-up singer for Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin and Diana Ross, who for many years has been a major force in bringing a sense of the world community to children’s musical theater. For Families: Korean principal members of the New York Philharmonic, including Michelle Kim, violin, Assistant Concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic; Lisa Kim, violin, Associate Principal of the New York Philharmonic, and Eileen Moon, cello, Associate Principal of the New York Philharmonic, bring the sounds of spring to our Queens community—an unforgettable experience. The performance is co-presented by Flushing Town Hall, JS Arts, and the Korean Cultural Service of New York. Starts at 8:00 PM.

Sat Mar 27th Dr. Hsing-Lih Chou & The Taiwan Center Chorus
Pioneer of the revolutionary music referred to as “Campus Folk Songs,” popular for more than 20 years in Taiwan and China, Dr. Chou has appeared at Alice Tully Hall and Lincoln Center Out-of-Doors Festival, and is a faculty member of CUNY specializing in International Educational Development and Asian Culture. The concert will feature both Chinese folk music and pop. Proceeds will support Flushing Town Hall’s programs. This program is supported by the Taiwan Merchants Association, Taiwan Center Chorus and the NY Institute of Culture and the Arts. Starts at 1:30 PM.
